Dangers of Frozen Shoulder

Dangers of Frozen Shoulder

Debra Murray

Adhesive capsulitis causes pain, stiffness and limited movement in the shoulder joint. The tissues surrounding the joint become stiff, movement in the shoulder becomes painful and difficult and scar tissue forms. Most of the time, the condition occurs slowly, but then, it also goes away slowly over a period of several months or more.

The condition can develop whenever you stop using the joint due to an injury, pain or other chronic health condition. Any type of problem with the shoulder can lead to adhesive capsulitis if you don’t work on maintaining full movement in the joint.

Progressive, gentle range-of-movement exercises, using the shoulder more and stretching will all help to prevent frozen shoulder from setting in. Even though the cause of the condition isn’t known, there are certain factors that are said to increase your risk of getting the condition.

Individuals who are 40 or older tend to be far more likely to experience this condition than their younger counterparts. Most of those who develop adhesive capsulitis are women, although it can occur in either sex.

For those who have experienced an increased length of immobility or reduced mobility in the shoulder, the risk of developing frozen shoulder are elevated. Immobility can be the result of many different factors, such as:

  • Broken Arm
  • Rotator Cuff Injury
  • Stroke
  • Recovering from Surgery

Those who have certain types of medical problems seem to be predisposed to developing frozen shoulder. Common examples of these diseases include:

  • Diabetes
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Cardiovascular Disease
  • Tuberculosis
  • Parkinson’s Disease

One of the best things you can do for the shoulder involved is continue to use it in as many of your regular daily activities as you can, but make sure to stay within your pain limits and constraints for range-of-movement. Applying cold or heat to the shoulder can help to alleviate some of the pain felt in the afflicted joint.
